Pastrami on Wry, which closed earlier this year, will reopen next year with new owners! Pastrami on Wry closed without notice in July.
Pastrami on Wry will reopen in the former location on East Center Street. The new owners are a family, Miguel and Nancy Daigle Proano. Miguel is a veteran of Buffalo Wild Wings and Joey Garlic’s; he is also a proud father of two. The owners bought the restaurant from former owner, Corey Wry, and closed on the purchase yesterday, November 29th. The owners aim to reopen the former restaurant on January 1st. The reopened-restaurant will retain their name according to their new website, www.pastramiwry.com , and aims to retain the menu according to a person close with the matter. Pastrami on Wry started 13 years ago at the corner of Cook Street and East Middle Turnpike in a small space before moving up East Center Street into a former paint shop; moving in along with a liquor store. The original Pastrami on Wry has been home to Kenny's Restaurant, now Taso's Eggsellent Adventure. Corey Wry started his career with his first restaurant in Manchester, Pastrami on Wry, before expanding to open Corey's Catsup and Mustard on Main Street; then opening CW's Chops and Catch on Hartford Road. Chops and Catch closed six years after it opened, sold to become an Italian restaurant. Catsup and Mustard closed in September and is still for sale on BizBuySell.

A statement on President Trump’s attack on the free press: The Manchester Scoop stands behind CNN, and strongly denounces President Trump’s attack on the free press. The press has a responsibility to the truth, and a duty to hold Politicians responsible for their actions. President Trump has a constitutional obligation to protect the right of the free press. President Trump’s personal attacks on Mr. Acosta for asking a question, relating to a lie spouted by Mr. Trump, were greatly inappropriate. The further revocation of Mr. Acosta’s press pass for knowingly false accusations of physical aggression towards a White House staffer during Mr. Trump’s verbal attack; are grossly inappropriate. The physical aggression that Acosta is accused happens when a White House aid attempts to forcibly remove Acosta's microphone; in which his arm hits her arm. As seen in the video below; he is making a hand motion when she attempts to grab microphone; and hits her arm in the process, to which he responds 'Pardon Me.' The free press has a right under the first amendment to hold Politicians responsible, and the President labeling CNN, MSNBC, and other left-leaning news as ‘the enemy of the people’ is downright wrong. We stand with Jim Acosta and CNN during these troubling times. Though The Manchester Scoop might not agree with Mr. Acosta's reporting tactics, nothing happened that would warrant the revocation of his press pass, nor the personal attack on Acosta's reputation. The Manchester Scoop believes it is important for all members of the press, big and small, to stand behind fellow members, regardless of political affiliation. Every member of the press, including us, works for the truth and to provide the public will important knowledge of what happening in their world. This is why we must denounce any actions to derail, or limit these rights. Image courtesy of Time Magazine.
Struggling mattress store, Mattress Firm, has quietly closed one of their two Manchester locations. The location, in The Edge Plaza, closed without fanfare just two weeks after the parent company, Mattress Firm, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Mattress Firm filed for bankruptcy on October 5, 2018 after mounting debt became too much for the brand. Mattress Firm is attempting to renegotiate the terms of their leases on the majority of their 3,300+ locations. Just days after the bankruptcy filing, 209 store closings were announced. Manchester was not on this list. The Manchester store closed in late October; the space had been marketed for lease, by property owner Brixmor, months leading up to the closure. Mattress Firm has one remaining location in Manchester, located in Best Buy Plaza, the space abuts Consignment Originals. This store space is also being marketed for lease by Brixmor. Manchester once had three Mattress Firm locations, two being less than 1/2 mile from each other. All locations were acquired when Mattress Firm purchased Sleepy's in 2015; all local locations were converted to the Mattress Firm brand. The remaining store was Better Bedding, before Sleepy's acquired them in 2010. The third Manchester Mattress Firm closed last year, to accommodate the relocation of Kaoud Rugs; which moved to open up space for Cost Plus World Market to open in Babies R Us Plaza. Mattress Firm began in 1986 in Houston, Texas. The chain has grown by purchasing their competition. Since their founding Mattress Firm has purchased Sleep Train, Mattress Pro, Sleep Country USA, Mattress Barn, and Sleepy's. At its peak, Mattress Firm has close to 3,600 locations. Farmington Bank will close their Vernon and Manchester branches along with a dozen other locations. These closures are the result of the recent merger with People’s United Bank, which has locations nearby. The majority of the closures are branches under the Farmington Bank umbrella. Farmington Bank branches in East Hartford and Farmington will also be closing, The Farmington Bank branch in South Windsor will remain open. The Manchester branch that is scheduled for closure opened this summer, the site was formerly a dry cleaners. The Vernon location opened a little more than two years ago, and the site was formerly home to Blockbuster. Both locations had long-term leases on their buildings. The closures will take place in late January. Remaining Farmington Bank branches will be rebranded as People's United Bank. New England-based Papa Gino's abruptly closed their Vernon and Windsor Locks locations along with dozens of other location this morning. Signs posted on the door apologize for the closure and point customers to other local locations. Papa Gino's sister chain D'Angelo's also closed numerous locations, a combined number of closures is close to 100 locations. D'Angelo's in Vernon remains open. Papa Gino's was founded in 1961 in East Boston, Mass as Piece O Pizza, before changing their name to Papa Gino's in 1968. The brand saw major expansion in New England in the 1980s and 1990s, before shrinking in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The pizza chain owns D'Angelo's Sandwiches. Both chains were briefly owned by YUM! Brands, owner of Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell. Papa Gino's had other area locations in Manchester (located where BJ's is now) and in East Hartford (In the former Charter Oak Mall.) These locations closed years ago. According to a press release from a Papa Gino's spokesman this morning, Papa Gino's and D'Angelo's are being sold from parent company PGHC to Wynnchurch Capitol. The details of the deal were not released to the public, and the deal is still subject to government approval. Wynnchurch Capitol owns a variety of companies ranging from pool care, car care, meat, all the way to limestone products. Papa Gino's has one remaining Connecticut location, the sole-remaining location is located in Willimantic. This location is located inside of the East Brook Mall. The chain now has 97 locations, down from 150+ last year. The Shoppes at Buckland Hills has recently welcome many new businesses to their mall, the stores range from a beauty supply store, a trampoline-based attractions, a toy store, and a national building block toy store! The mall will also welcome a new coffee shop! The mall welcomed Curly Star later last month; The store sells a variety of beauty shop products ranging from wigs to weaves, to curlers. The store is located on the upper level next to Hallmark. Curly Star is about 2,500 square feet, and was formerly home to Foot Locker and Bag It! Boutique. A recent addition to the mall's roster of attractions is FUN4ALL, a bungee trampoline, which has been set up in the atrium space in front of Dick's Sporting Good. The trampoline will be open through the holidays. FUN4ALL joins many entertainment options at Buckland including Funny Bone (a comedy club), All in Adventure (an escape room), Build a Bear (build your own stuffed animal), and Dave & Buster's (an arcade restaurant.) A new toy store has opened their doors at the mall. Goofy Turtle has opened on the first floor near Macy's. The store was formerly home to FYE, which closed earlier this year. Goofy Turtle features a 'play-before-you-pay' concept in which you can play with a toy before deciding whether to purchase it. LEGO has opened a seasonal pop-up in Buckland Hills. The store will last through the holidays before closing. This is part of a new pop-up concept pioneered by LEGO to collect market share after Toys R Us bankruptcy earlier this year. LEGO opened in a small space on the first floor near JC Penney which was formerly home to Belden's Jewelers. Another recent addition is 208 Foot Spa. The spa opened last month in the former Best Buy Mobile space. The spa provides massages at rates of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 1 hour time periods. Best Buy Mobile closed in May when the chain was killed off by parent company Best Buy. Go Calendar and Games has taken their seasonal perch in the former Rue21 space on the second floor near Macy's. The store opened in late September and will be open through the Christmas season. The chain of toy stores sell board games, stuffed animals, small toys, along with calendars. Rue21 closed in 2017 after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Ziya Men's Clothing will open a store inside The Shoppes at Buckland Hills. Ziya has two locations in Connecticut, one location in Waterbury, and a second location at The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor. It's unclear if Ziya will close their Evergreen location after the Buckland location opens. Ziya is currently located next to Brooks Brothers, in a space formerly home to Ann Taylor. Ziya moved to this location last year from the former Ten Thousand Village location; Ziya moved to accommodate New England's first Vionic shoe store. Coming soon to the former Teavana space is Massachusetts-based 'Mocha Emporium.' The coffee shop should be open before Christmas according to a person close to the matter. The coffee shop has locations in Holyoke, Springfield, and Hadley. Mocha Emporium replaces Teavana, which closed early this year when Starbucks closed all remaining Teavana locations. Another new business coming to Buckland Hills is BJ's Brewhouse which will be constructed on the outskirts of The Shoppes at Buckland Hills. The restaurant will be build on a tract of land adjacent to Red Robin/Long Horn. Currently the land is used for overflow parking, and is the staging area for mall snow crews in the winter.
