Big Y is planning a Manchester gas station according to planning and zoning documents released earlier this week. The gas station will be located adjacent to Big Y Supermarket on Tolland Turnpike.

Big Y has begun planning to open a 'Big Y Express' branded gas station in Manchester. The space, located at 176 Tolland Turnpike, is currently home to a BP branded gas station and convenient store; also located on the site is a food truck named 'The Munch Wagon.'

The new proposed gas station was announced in Planning and Zoning Commission's  new business. The agenda defines Big Y's plan as 'For Construction of a convenience store with associatd gas station and related improvements at 176 Tolland Turnpike.'

Big Y began opening gas stations and convenient stores in 2013 with their first location in Lee, Massachusetts. The gas stations opened after Big Y formed a partnership with FL Roberts, a prominent gas station operator in Massachusetts. The company has since expanded to include eight Big Y Express stores, seven in Mass, and one in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. Another Connecticut Big Y Express is currently under development in Ellington, Connecticut, across from Big Y plaza.

Big Y began in 1936 as a small supermarket in Massachusetts, before expanding to become expanding to over 77 Big Y branded supermarkets, 1 Fresh Acres Market branded supermarket, 8 Big Y Express gas stations, and 1 Table and Vine liquor store.
